The current background check has failed in a number of high profile shootings where an individual who shouldn't have been allowed to buy a gun was able to because one government agency failed to report to the FBI when they were required to.
Many shootings could have been stopped if individuals had voiced concerns about a person's mental health. They hesitated because they were afraid of the stigma and how heavy handed the reaction to the concern would be.
More than half the gun related deaths are due to gang related activity or suicide. Working to reduce either one of these issues would have a greater effect, not just by reducing the gun deaths, but on quality of life in the USA for everyone.
Gun laws don't seem to have an effect either way on gun related violence and crime. States with high gun violence include both red states with more lenient gun laws and blue states with more strict gun laws. Federal restrictions haven't really had huge reductions in gun crime and loosening federal laws haven't caused more. The money and time and energy we spend looking at guns would be better spent elsewhere if the goal is really to reduce crime, reduce violence, and increase the quality of life in the US.
