A federal judge in Idaho temporarily blocked the enforcement of a state law on Tuesday that bans gender transition care for minors and threatens medical professionals with a felony conviction if they provide such care, just six days before it was set to take effect.
Transgender minors in the state will be able to receive gender transition care for now, while the challenge against the state ban proceeds.
The law, House Bill 71, specifically bans gender transition surgeries, puberty blockers and hormone therapy for those under 18 with gender dysphoria. It also makes it a felony for medical professionals to provide the care, with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
Idaho’s Republican-controlled Legislature passed the bill, also known as the Vulnerable Child Protective Act, in February, and Gov. Brad Little, also a Republican, signed it into law in April. The ban was set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

Some minors genuinely have gender dysphoria and can benefit from this treatment. However, too many teens think they are trans when they are just going through puberty with little guidance as to what and why it is happening. These types of decisions should be made by doctors and families, not the government, similar to abortion.

More clarity is needed here. The headline says that he blocked the ban, but the comments seem to suggest that he supported the ban? Anyway, there should absolutely be a complete ban on gender transitions for minors. Anyone who thinks otherwise should not be allowed near children, frankly.
