Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

No, hire professionally trained security guards instead

Unarmed teachers are put in the impossible position of having to place themselves between the threat and their students. Without the ability to defend themselves, you are creating soft targets and more victims. Security guards cannot be everywhere at once. Arm teachers to be able to protect themselves and students until help arrives.

That is true, however, not all teachers should be trusted to conduct themselves in a manner responsible enough to control and own a firearm around children. There are many ways that having a gun in close proximity to children could go wrong. For instance, a teacher may go crazy and resort to threats with said gun or may not keep it secure enough and out of reach for children. To fix this potential issue, professionally trained bodyguards should patrol schools and be responsible for wielding firearms on school property.

I agree that in a perfect scenario, we wouldn’t need to place the burden on the teachers directly. They would be given the opportunity coupled with mandatory training. But I would add that I’m amazed at how many times the topic of not being able to trust the mental state of teachers has been raised in objection to my arguments. It amazes me how many people distrust teachers and blindly trust some “security guard” without the same concern. Would you mind elaborating on why you feel teachers are or may be unfit to carry a firearm in self defense or in defense of their students, but the concern evaporates when the stranger’s profession is shifted to the title, Security Guard?
