In these nine months, there have been a total of 801 deaths at the hands of police officers.
The police motto, ‘protect and serve’ has been twisted into something that is unrecognizable and inhumane. The police force is comprised of 67% white men, many of whom are existing with severely ‘masculine’ ideas of societal norms. The individual need of power and control within the law enforcement system endangers the people it was built to protect.
Police brutality is the unwarranted, excessive, and illegal use of force against civilians by U.S. law enforcement officers. It is an extreme form of police misconduct and is a civil rights violation. 58% of killings by police in 2022 — 682 deaths — were responses to traffic stops, escalations of mental health crises, or situations where the person was non-threatening.
97% of people killed by police in 2022 were killed by police shootings. Officers were charged with a crime in only 12 of these cases. One percent of all killings by police. Why are police not being held accountable for the beautiful lives that they are taking?
Internal affairs departments in police departments are mainly focused on exonerating colleagues, not on investigating misconduct. Out of the 1,201 police-caused deaths in 2022, 313 officers were identified. 22 of these officers had shot and killed somebody previously. 8 had multiple prior shootings.
Using body cameras, it will be easier for the courts to hold police accountable for violent crimes they commit. If the justice system gets rid of immunity for police officers, body camera videos are extremely necessary to make sure that police are held accountable.
