Yes, and it should test more than just a basic level of understanding

 @9JZV4S8 from Colorado disagreed…2mos2MO

No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test

Nope. Most Americans don't have a basic understanding. Why would we expect more from someone else than we do ourselves?

As a former US History teacher, I can guarantee you that most students would not pass this test without studying. Hell, most Americans could not pass this test right now. Do I think that US History is important and everyone (who lives here) should know at least some of it? Yes, absolutely. But most Americans are wildly undereducation in all social studies because of the intention underfunding of education and the recent attack on what's taught in the classroom. In fact, my best student one year was a German exchange student. Not only did she get a 100 in the class, she contributed so much to conversations and got nearly a perfect score on the state testing. I had 6 students not pass that year (passing score is 40%) out of my almost 200.

Our schools don't teach our children enough to pass the Citizenship Test. Why should we expect immigrants to know more than our own citizenry?

 @9FNVJNP from Utah disagreed…7mos7MO

That is why it is important for immigrants to pass, because at least they have an understanding of the nation. We should not bring more people in that don't know anything, it just makes the nation stupider on average

 @ISIDEWITHDiscuss this answer...7yrs7Y

Yes, but it should only cover very basic and simple topics

Yes, and it should be a high school graduation requirement.

This is excellent. If we require it for others, we should require it of ourselves.

There already is a civics test, in English, during the naturalization process.
There are, however, waivers and exemptions if a person qualifies for one. Regardless, a civics test exists, there are three components, reading, writing, and speaking the civics test covers important US history and government topics. So this question is moot

 @9DB6JZGSocialist from Ohio answered…8mos8MO

Yes, but so should all citizens born in the United States

 @9DB6JZGSocialist from Ohio corrected…8mos8MO

born in the United States

including those born in the United States

 @9BQKHT3 from Ohio answered…12mos12MO

Yes, because people come to our country and expect us to treat them as 100% equal, and anything other than 100% kindness or gratefulness is racist, but go to their country, there is a good chance that they will not treat you with the kindness and respect that they expect from us.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

 @9BN5D2K from California answered…12mos12MO

United States should only accept white immigrants of high IQ who are already skilled workers and this should not have to pass a rigorous test

  @VulcanMan6  from Kansas commented…12mos12MO

This is just blatantly racist, and something tells me you wouldn't be able to pass this anyway...

 @LuckyChucky411Democrat from California answered…3yrs3Y

For what purpose? This question is poorly worded.
Historically tests like this have been slanted in racist ways and used to further the goals of institutional racism. While this information is important it needs to be insured that it’s being done fairly and with egalitarian goals in mind

No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test

Yes, like when there had to be a reading test to vote, there are too many white nationalists it would be too risky.

 @8G67WCD from Wisconsin answered…4yrs4Y

Only immigrants who despise Trump should be given citizenship.

I don't know how they couldn't. He is a nationalist jerk.

 @9LJY92KLibertarian from Pennsylvania answered…5 days5D

Yes, it should be a basic understanding, and American citizens alike should be required to take one when registering to vote.

 @9LJSF2L from Pennsylvania answered…5 days5D

Yes, and Americans should have to pass a test on the same material after their sophomore year(s) of high school. .

 @9LJPY64 from Oregon answered…5 days5D

Yes, but only regarding daily life skills such as driving, paying bills, exchange of money, banking, etc

 @9LJ9R36 from South Carolina answered…7 days7D

Yes, and do the same for all graduating High Schoolers before they can register to vote. Also make it more than just a basic understanding/

 @9LG7G92 from Minnesota answered…1wk1W

I believe under circumstances such as people running from cartels in Mexico that they should be given a basic understanding of history and government however it should be VERY basic, like who's the president, what's the currency, whos side were we on In ww2, simple questions.

 @9LD6CYN from Arizona answered…2wks2W

All current and prospective citizens should be required to pass the same test. Prospective citizens should be tested to gain citizenship, and current citizens should be tested upon turning 18 (or at 17 if they elect to serve their mandatory military two years of military service early). The test should be rigorous and establish a common ground for all citizens.

 @9LCYPDZ from Virginia answered…2wks2W

Testing on the country's language is unfair as many immigrants may indeed be intelligent. However, their knowledge of English may be limited. The tests should be provided in their native languages.

 @9LBW2BG from Colorado answered…2wks2W

No - if they just want to enter the country and not become a citizen Yes - if they are an immigrant and want to become a US citizen

 @9L77X48Transhumanist from Arkansas answered…3wks3W

Yes, because I know that there are certain very bigoted people who don't even know their own history, please educate them.

 @9L64PMP from Iowa answered…3wks3W

If it's going to be used, make it fair, I'm sure a lot of US citizens now don't even know enough to pass.

 @9L45WLM from Utah answered…4wks4W

mostly they should be taught the laws of the land. and to be honest, most American citizens should be taught it in high school

 @9L3T749 from Tennessee answered…4wks4W

Yes, but also require every US citizen to also pass this test in order to graduate high school or achieve an equivalent.

 @9KZDSVK from Wisconsin answered…1mo1MO

Immigrants and citizens should need to pass civics tests, at least in order to participate in government. There needs to be a federal standard to prevent disenfranchising voters unjustly but voters should know how the government works at a basic level.

 @9KYHBN6 from Florida answered…1mo1MO

Yes, but it shouldn't be based on what they already know of our countries' history or system of government. Instead we should give them a preliminary psychological screening by testing their ethics and morality to make sure their values are at least 'good'or vaguely pro-American.

 @9KXSKXV  from Colorado answered…1mo1MO

Yes, and we should also require all High School Students across the nation to pass it before graduation.

 @9KWMYPF from Kansas answered…1mo1MO

Yes, but it should be very basic, also require all citizens to pass the same test prior to high school graduation and/or passing the GED.
